Steinhoff drops Lotus Notes and heads to the cloud

By

Furniture giant Steinhoff Asia Pacific is replacing Lotus Notes with 1050 seats of Microsoft's Business Online Productivity Suite which it will access as a cloud service via Telstra's T-Suite starting in May.

According to Telstra the company is the largest customer signed to date for the service and follows on the heels of earlier big deals with organisations such as Tony Ferguson Weight Loss Centres. It also eclipses the previous largest user realestate.com which signed up for 750 seats of Microsoft Exchange Online sold via T-Suite in September last year.

Steinhoff which owns the Freedom Furniture, Snooze and Bay Leather Republic brands, will have access to Exchange, SharePoint, Office Communications, Office Live Meeting and Microsoft Exchange Online Deskless worker under the terms of the deal.

While the applications and data will be hosted out of Microsoft's Singapore based data centre, access will be via the Telstra T-suite portal which will also handle the billing.

According to a statement from Steinhoff Asia-Pacific IT Manager, Clive Nichols; "The rationale for making the change from the existing Lotus Notes platform was largely due to risk mitigation. The version of Lotus Notes currently used is no longer supported and is incompatible with Windows 7.

'Steinhoff Asia-Pacific made the decision to move to a cloud based email solution based on the lower operational cost of a cloud solution in comparison with an equivalent configured on premise solution. This, together with the improved scalability, simplified management and a platform that will allow Steinhoff Asia-Pacific to quickly and easily deploy further communication enhancements led us to this decision.

'It was decided that, in terms of a cloud offering, the BPOS solution was the best fit, at this stage, for the organisation."

HubOne will manage migration of Steinhoff's services to the cloud, with the integration process tipped to be complete by May.
