Chinese vendor Huawei says it is willing to sell its 5G processors to Apple, in what appears to be a change of policy.

Huawei founder and chief executive Ren Zhengfei told CNBC in an interview earlier today that his company would consider selling its 5G chips to other companies, including Apple.

Huawei is the world's biggest telecommunications equipment vendor and has been in the consumer market for a short time but is already the third biggest smartphone vendor by market share.

Apple is facing problems with its 5G chip suppliers, and court battle against long-time supplier Qualcomm is set to begin on Monday US time. In the meantime, Apple has begun using chips from Intel.

But this has delayed its manufacturing of a 5G-enabled iPhone. While Qualcomm has a modem that can support 5G, Intel's product is expected to only become available in 2020.

Ren spoke to CNBC in Mandarin and his words were translated by an official translator. "We are open to Apple in this regard," he said when asked about selling Huawei's 5G chips to other smartphone makers.

In January, Huawei unveiled a 5G multi-mode chipset and the first commercial 5G device powered by it.

The company claimed at the time that the Balong 5000 chipset and the Huawei 5G CPE Pro would "provide the world's fastest wireless connections for your smartphone, your home, the office, and on the go".

Last year, Huawei's consumer business grew by leaps and bounds to become the division earning the most revenue for the company.
