A subsidiary of the Chinese telecommunications company Huawei Technologies has completed the installation of a 6000-kilometre trans-Atlantic fibre optic subsea cable between Fortaleza in Brazil and Kribi in Cameroon.

A statement from Huawei Marine Natworks said the South Atlantic Inter Link, otherwise known as SAIL, would be good for the next 25 years and marked the first time that the continents of Africa and the Americas were fully connected.

"The SAIL cable system has been designed to be a fast and direct path, utilising industry-leading 100G transmission technology and to deliver a design capacity of 32 Tbps, through a four-fibre pair configuration since its inception in 2016," the statement said.

The cable is a joint investment by China Unicom (with its wholly-owned subsidiary, China Unicom do Brasil Telecomunicacoes) and Cameroon telco CAMTEL.

"With the rapid development of global infrastructure and a massive surge in worldwide Internet traffic, Africa and Latin America are becoming strategic emerging markets of the global telecommunications industry," the statement said.

"The introduction of SAIL meets the traffic demands from the emerging markets, and also opens new routing through diverse paths between Africa and North America, Europe and South America.

"Through the launch of SAIL, countries in these regions, especially the Southern Hemisphere countries, will be more connected and in a better position to drive the development of the region's digital economy."

Along with other cable links directed to Eurasia, SAIL is expected to have a positive impact on the current communications market in Global South.

The cable will allow immediate links for companies with connections to Brazil and South Africa in the Southern Hemisphere, and China, Russia and India in Eurasia, driving increasing communication demand and drive rapid expansion of global emerging markets in these areas.
