5G network rollouts accelerate, 4G device demand slows says Qualcomm

By

American processor maker Qualcomm says 5G network rollouts are progressing at a much faster rate when compared to 4G and, on a global scale, it expects over 20 operators to launch 5G service and over 20 OEMs to have 5G devices in the first twelve months after the first commercial launch.

According to Qualcomm – which has just released its results revealing Q3 FY19 earnings - the accelerated transition to 5G is helped by Dynamic Spectrum Sharing which enables carriers to dynamically repurpose 4G spectrum for 5G use.

The company says DSS is a game changer for carriers and will result in a much more rapid proliferation of 5G than have been seen in prior G transitions.

And Qualcomm says the results proved another solid quarter operationally in the midst of “slower demand for 4G devices” as Australia prepares for the transition to 5G.

Qualcomm’s says early work developing the fundamental elements of 5G has resulted in a valuable IP portfolio and provided the company with early insight into what products need to be developed and commercialised at scale.

On 5G Qualcomm also says that:

  • 5G design wins have doubled over the last three months, leaving Qualcomm extremely well positioned as 5G ramps in early calendar year 2020.
  • Virtually all 5G design wins are powered by Qualcomm’s complete RF Front-End solutions for 5G Sub6 and / or millimetre wave. Today, Qualcomm is the only company delivering an end-to-end comprehensive modem-to-antenna solution.
  • While near term demand trends are not surprisingly soft as the entire market and industry transitions to 5G, Qualcomm is very excited with their design wins and growth in device content as 5G ramps, particularly into 2020.

“We delivered another solid quarter operationally in the midst of slower demand for 4G devices as the market prepares for the global transition to 5G,” said Steve Mollenkopf, CEO of Qualcomm.

“Our 5G design wins have doubled over the last three months, leaving us extremely well positioned as 5G ramps in early calendar year 2020.”
