Telstra is claiming an Australian-first with the launch of a solution that brings together its fixed and 4G mobile networks in a single device to get homes online sooner, and back online quickly when fixed services are interrupted.

Telstra says its Gateway Frontier all-in-one modem, will deliver a more reliable broadband connection and, once plugged in, will connect a home to the Internet within minutes, over 4G, without having to wait for the fixed service to be installed and switched on.

Telstra executive director of home and business products, Stuart Bird, says if there is an interruption to the home broadband such as planned network maintenance, the gateway will automatically switch over to the Telstra mobile network within minutes.

“As households get more devices online and embrace a new wave of smart home technologies, the Telstra Gateway Frontier offers families peace of mind their home will be able to get back online quickly,” Bird says.

“We know home Internet is central to how our customers access entertainment, organise their lives and connect to the world. Many customers have told us being without a home broadband service for even one hour is disruptive so we are introducing a solution that enables them to stay connected to the things they love to do online within minutes of plugging their home gateway in.

“By bringing together the best of our mobile and home networks, families can be confident we will keep them connected so they can continue to access entertainment, work from home and keep in touch online.

“And, as our customers adopt more smart home technologies, staying online becomes even more integral as households connect to services such as remote monitoring, in-home voice assistants and home automation.”

The Telstra Gateway Frontier forms part of Telstra’s Network 2020 strategy, unveiled last year, which will see the company invest in converged products across fixed and mobile.

Bird says the Gateway Frontier features the latest in Wi-Fi technology (Wi-Fi 802.11ac 4x4) to increase in-home Wi-Fi speeds up to four times — compared to Telstra’s previous entry-level gateway (when using AC-compatible devices) — “to significantly boost signal reach as Australians embrace video streaming on smart TVs and mobile screens”.

Telstra says the Gateway Frontier modem will only work over its mobile network in homes within 4G coverage areas and speeds are limited to up to 6/1 Mbps.

The Telstra Gateway Frontier is available to customers on ADSL, cable and NBN from today, and between 14 Feb and 27 March new and existing customers can purchase the Frontier for $216 outright or $9 per month for 24 months on an eligible 24-month home bundle on a hardware repayment option.
