Tableau's 10th anniversary at conference showcases major innovations


Analytics platform Tableau's 10th anniversary conference DATA17 is on in Las Vegas this week with 14,000 participants to see a new in-memory data engine called Hyper, Project Maestro, new API and plenty more.

More than 14,000 "passionate attendees" at DATA17 are there to see upcoming innovations to Tableau's platform including "Hyper, a new in-memory data engine technology; a new data preparation product codenamed Project Maestro, and a new Extensions API that gives developers more opportunities to enrich Tableau dashboards with third party applications".

Elissa Fink, Tableau chief marketing officer, said: "It has been incredible to experience the growth of this conference over the past decade, seeing our community come together in the name of data and innovation year after year. In fact, we saw extraordinary things out of our community last week, when they rallied together and created #Data17Donates to help those affected by the recent events in Las Vegas.

“We look forward to finding strength in our engaged and mission-driven community this week.”

Throughout the week, the conference "will feature more than 300 breakout sessions, 100 hands-on training sessions and inspiring keynotes from Tableau chief executive Adam Selipsky; Co-authors of Freakonomics, Steven D. Levitt and Stephen J. Dubner; Co-host and executive producer of MythBusters, Adam Savage; and Big Data Expert and Professor, Talithia Williams."

Also returning is the popular Tableau “Devs on Stage” event, along with "Data + Women" events and the popular “Tableau Doctor” appointments with Tableau experts".

To top off the thrill, only data analysts peering into the Matrix-like vision of data know how, we're also told that "thousands of attendees will experience the excitement of IronViz, the ultimate battle of Tableau skills, and more than 100 Tableau customers, including Honeywell, AirBnB, Zillow, and more, will share their success stories and analytics wins with attendees".

Heidi Haupt, a Lead Software Developer at Experian, who has been to every Tableau Conference to date, says, “It’s hard to believe it was a decade ago that I attended the first Tableau conference; jump forward to today and I’m still hooked. Tableau notes it will kick off its 10th conference with "a keynote showcasing new and upcoming capabilities of the Tableau platform that will help supercharge people everywhere with the power of data to drive better business results".

Here are some highlights:

Hyper – Tableau’s new technology for faster extracts now in public beta:

Tableau says it "will demonstrate Hyper’s ability to slice and dice half a billion rows of data in sub-seconds. With improved extract creation and query performance, customers can dive into the freshest data, without waiting. Hyper also gives organisations the ability to scale their extracts and their deployments to more users without impacting performance. Customers can experience the power of Hyper today by joining the Tableau 10.5 beta". 

Extensions API:

With the new Extensions API, Tableau says "developers can create dashboard extensions that enable customers to integrate and interact with other applications directly in Tableau. This allows customers to access the full functionality of 3rd party applications without ever leaving their dashboard. Wayfair, a Tableau customer along with Partners, Alation, Automated Insights, and Frontline Systems will showcase their extensions on stage during the opening keynote. The API is available as a developer-preview here today." 

Tableau on Linux:

Also coming in Tableau 10.5, Tableau Server on Linux will combine the benefits of Tableau with the flexibility of an open source operating system (OS). With this new offering, Tableau says "organisations using a Linux OS can seamlessly optimise and integrate Tableau into their current processes and workflows, and get the most out of their existing IT infrastructure. Tableau Server customers will be able to leverage the stability, security, and flexibility for which Linux is known".

Project Maestro:

Tableau will demonstrate its innovative data prep product, codename Project Maestro which will be available in public beta this quarter. The company says, "Project Maestro will help more people quickly and confidently transform their data for analysis in a visual and direct way. Customers can combine and clean their data, operationalise their data flow, and share their work across their organisation with the Tableau platform."

During “Devs on Stage”, we're told that "customers will also see highlights from the recently released Tableau 10.4, which enables self-service analytics at scale by providing customers with a balance of empowerment and governance, while at the same time creating a community where people can work together seamlessly to answer questions of their data. With today’s Tableau 10.5 beta release, Tableau proudly boasts its 'pace of innovation' continues to provide customers with the most cutting-edge data analytics technology. In remembrance of the Las Vegas tragedy, Tableau advises it will "dedicate the conference to the victims and their families, first responders, and the heroes who worked tirelessly in the aftermath of the shootings. During the conference, Tableau will be raising funds for the National Compassion Fund to support the victims and their families".
