WD Red Pro hard disks now in 5 and 6TB

By

Popular for use in network-attached storage (MAS) Western Digital (WD) have released the 5 and 6TB Red Pro hard disks in Australia.

The Pro series 5 and 6TB drives are characterised a much larger 128MB cache and a five year warranty. The 7200 RPM, SATA 6 drive delivers 6 Gb/s and in real world use can sustain 214 Megabytes per second (MB/s) and will work in NAS units holding up to 16 drives.

“WD provides customers a full portfolio of high capacity NAS storage solutions (WD Red and WD Red Pro) for home, consumer and business NAS solutions.” said Cindi Grace, senior vice president of WD storage technology group. “With the capacity expansion, there is now a path for customers to increase the storage density of their systems while knowing their data is protected with the most trusted and valued brand on the market.”

The Red Pro drives contain:

  • Advanced firmware technology called NASware 3.0 enabling seamless integration, robust data protection, and optimal performance for systems operating in the demanding NAS environment
  • Dual actuator technology that improves positional accuracy over the data tracks and head positioning.
  • StableTrac technology then secures the motor shaft at both ends to reduce system-induced vibration and stabilize the drive platters for accurate tracking during read and write operations
  • Hardware vibration compensation technology which monitors the drive to correct both linear and rotational vibration in real time, further increasing drive reliability
