The new Seagate NAS HDD 8TB is, as its name suggests, an 8TB drive designed for NAS, RAID and server storage.
The increased capacity means fewer drives are needed for a given amount of storage, or - more likely given the way storage requirements continue to grow - more capacity can be squeezed into a given enclosure.
The NAS HDD 8TB is designed for use in enclosures with one to eight bays, and has a three-year warranty.
Qnap and Synology welcomed the product's arrival.
“Our customers are finding themselves under more pressure than ever as the volume of data they need to deal with continues to increase dramatically,” said Qnap business division general manager David Chiang.
"The new Seagate NAS HDD 8TB will offer professionals a huge capacity with which to easily manage this growing amount of data."
And Synology product manager Chad Chiang said "NAS solutions are rapidly becoming the storage medium of choice for organisations with limited IT resources that need a quick and easy solution to manage their data. The new Seagate 8TB drives will give our customers incredible capacity to handle the huge volumes of data their users are creating and sharing."
The NAS HDD 8TB will be generally available at the end of the first quarter of 2016.
The Seagate NAS HDD range also offers models with 1, 2, 3, 4 and 6TB capacities.
