EMC Unity provides enterprise-class file and block storage with support for Vmware Vvols, and is offered in all-flash array, hybrid array (starting at less than US$10,000), software-defined and converged configurations.
Despite the modest 2U footprint for an entry-level configuration with up to 80TB of flash storage, Unity scales to more than 3PB of storage and up to 300K IOPS.
In addition, Unity is available as a virtual appliance (UnityVSA) and as part of VCE Vblock and VxBlock System 350 configurations.
Features include snapshots and remote sync/async replication, controller-based encryption (unspecified services - presumably including data compression and deduplication - will be added over time), zero-impact garbage collection, a REST API for automation and DevOps use, and integrated copy data management with EMC iCDM
In addition to an HTML5 management and monitoring interface, Unity connects with VMware and Microsoft management tools.
It is also compatible with EMC's new MyService360, , a new online service that gives real-time visibility into EMC systems, including software version levels, connectivity status, and capacity alerts. EMC II president of global services Kevin Roche announced that MyService360 is available now, free of charge to any EMC customer that is under warranty or on a maintenance contract.
EMC II CEO David Goulden pointed out that Unity comes with a three-year money-back guarantee, a lifetime flash endurance guarantee, and fixed maintenance prices for as long as the customer owns the device.
EMC core technologies division senior vice president and general manager of mid-range solutions Jeff Boudreau said "EMC Unity offers modern data centre simplicity and all-flash performance in an affordable package. Designed specifically to get the most out of all-flash media, EMC is making it simpler and more affordable for both SMEs and enterprises to modernise their data centres."
"Businesses with midsized IT needs don’t want a stripped-down or supposedly-simplified enterprise storage array – instead, such businesses need a solution that is built from the ground up with their needs in mind," said ESG practice director and senior analyst Mark Peters.
"With Unity, EMC is combining its decade of flash expertise with its trusted midsized storage market knowledge and leadership in order to deliver an all-flash solution that that has all of the features expected in the enterprise, but packaged affordably to meet midsized IT needs."
