Bitcasa and SanDisk team up for cloud-enabled storage

SanDisk has licensed Bitcasa's cloud storage platform, and will use it to develop cloud-enabled storage devices.

Bitcasa provides secure APIs and white label cloud storage applications for OEMs, network operators, and software developers, and the Bitcasa Platform enables secure file storage, access, and sharing for Android, iOS, Windows, Mac OSX, Linux, and the web.

According to Bitcasa, OEMs, carriers, and ISVs see cloud storage as a brand extension that can attract and retain customers.

But it doesn't always go well for those customers - for example, Lacie is in the process of closing down its Wuala cloud storage service.

"We are thrilled to announce our collaboration with SanDisk," said Bitcasa CEO Brian Taptich.

"It further validates our belief that cloud storage will ultimately become disaggregated, creating a huge opportunity for Bitcasa and our partners."

The first SanDisk product to use Bitcasa's technology will be the Ultra+Cloud USB Flash Drive (pictured), which provides 64GB of flash storage and 64GB of cloud storage.

Enterprise Strategy Group senior analyst Terri McClure said "Bitcasa is showing true innovation here, allowing partners to quickly and seamlessly bridge physical devices to the cloud. SanDisk clearly recognizes the value in the Bitcasa platform and the value it can provide across numerous technologies and markets."

Bitcasa's existing partners include Huawei, Hutchison Telecom and Samsung, plus more than 23,000 developers.
