SUSE announces first acquisition Featured

SUSE Linux has been acquired thrice in its history. Now the company, a Nuremberg-based independent business unit of the British mainframe group Micro Focus, has gone to the other side of the tracks, announcing that it will be making its first ever acquisition.

The company said on Tuesday it had bought software-defined storage management assets from German IT company it-novum, including openATTIC, the open-source Ceph and storage management framework.

The announcement was made to coincide with the formal opening of SUSECon 2016, the company's annual conference which is being held in Washington DC.

This will permit SUSE to step up the use of openATTIC as the management framework for its SUSE Enterprise Storage product. A number of engineers have moved from it-novum to join SUSE as part of the deal.

SUSE and it-novum have been developing additional Ceph management functionality for openATTIC for some months now.

SUSE chief executive Nils Brauckmann said: “Acquiring openATTIC from it-novum perfectly aligns with SUSE’s open source strategy – providing software-defined infrastructure solutions for enterprises requiring powerful management capabilities.

“This transaction is also another tangible indication of SUSE’s increasing momentum. For the first time, our business is expanding through both organic growth and technology acquisition. The storage revolution is underway, and enterprise-grade storage management is essential for customers that will continue to have a mix of storage technologies for many years to come.”

The company also announced the upcoming availability of SUSE Enterprise Storage 4 powered by Ceph technology. The release marks the first production release of the Ceph filesystem.

SUSE Enterprise Storage 4 is based on the Ceph Jewel release and can handle at bulk, archive and large data storage management. The simplification and scaling of the storage of applications such as video surveillance, CCTV, online presence and training, streaming media, medical imaging (mammography, X-rays, CT, MRI, etc.), seismic processing, genomic mapping, CAD, archive, virtual machine storage, and backup datasets can be done with this release.

It also enables customers to run production workloads for block, object and file storage within a single cluster, further reducing capital and operation costs.

Commenting on the release, Gerald Pfeifer, SUSE vice-president of Products and Technology Programmes, said: “Bulk, archive and large data is growing, and as it does, customers need flexible storage solutions that can handle the specific needs of their business and data without breaking the bank.

“IT departments are finding they need to handle growing amounts of unstructured data while they are tasked with increasing innovation and reducing costs. SUSE Enterprise Storage helps them do exactly that with open source technology backed by one of the brightest and most reliable providers in the world.”

The Germany-based SUSE also said it would extending its “SUSE Ready” application-certification programme to include SUSE OpenStack Cloud and SUSE Enterprise Storage.

SUSE Ready verifies for customers that partner solutions are mutually tested and supported on SUSE software, so they can confidently build out their software-defined infrastructures using compatible and supported third-party solutions.

“As adoption of open source cloud and storage solutions increases, a strong partner ecosystem is critical to ensuring customers can deploy best-of-breed solutions to meet their requirements for agility, scalability and cost efficiency,” said Naji Almahmoud, vice-president of Cloud and Software Alliances for SUSE.

“Customers seek vendor validation and enterprise support for their mission-critical workloads. SUSE Ready enables independent software vendors to certify their applications across SUSE products and solutions.”

The company honoured its 2016 Customers of the Year. The award recipients represent the four regions of the globe and are recognised for “defining their future” using SUSE open
source solutions.
Recipients by region are:

  • Aché Laboratórios Farmacêuticos – Latin America
  • Nan Shan Life Insurance – Asia/Pacific/Japan
  • SAP SE – Europe/Middle East/Africa
  • Tyson Foods – North America

“Celebrating the success of customers truly means something, because working together, SUSE’s solutions and services have made a tangible difference to their businesses,” said Ronald de Jong, SUSE president of sales. “As a group and individually, these honoured organisations were able to operate more efficiently, create new products and services faster, and ultimately beat their competition by harnessing the power and flexibility of open source platforms.”

The write is attending SUSECon 2016 as a guest of the company.
