Home Business IT Enterprise Solutions VIDEOS: Interview with Tintri CTO Kieran Harty at vForum 2014, new VMstore T880

Tintri has released its new VMstore T800-series, terminating wasted rack space with the industry’s highest density platform that delivers performance and capacity, along with a very capable new OS - there's also two video interviews to watch from the VMware vForum 2014 exhibition floor.

Tintri was one of the many companies exhibiting and partnering with VMware for its annual vForum event, with Sydney’s 2014 event concluding in Luna Park yesterday.

We spoke to Tintri’s Co-Founder and CTO, Kieran Harty on video. Kieran was previously was one of the top VMware execs and clearly knows his stuff, as you’ll see in the embedded video below.

We also got the chance to talk to Adrian Noblett, an Australian Tintri Systems Engineer in Australia, also on video, who showed us a range of benefits in using Tintri’s technologies.

Embargoed until today was information on the new models in the VMstore T800-series, with the top end T880 model able to pack in a massive 100TB and 3500 VMs in a 4U package and the new Tintri OS 3.1, among other developments.

Tintri bills itself as ‘the leading producer of application-aware smart storage for virtualization and cloud environments’, with the new T800-series VMstores able to ‘support the highest VM densities in the industry’.

The new Tintri OS 3.1 also now has ‘integration with VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) for automated disaster recovery, SecureVM for data at rest encryption and REST API SDK for workflow automation and ecosystem integration.’

Tintri’s VMstore T800-series comes in three models, the top-end T880, then the T850 and the T820.

The company offers ‘native VM-level data management across multi-hypervisors’, which makes these new VMstore models ‘ideal for virtualised environments and private cloud deployments with hundreds or thousands of virtual machines.’

A Senior Program Manager in the US Department of Defense Cyber Range said: “In just ten seconds, Tintri can do what the legacy storage system did in eight hours.”

As previously noted, the T880 can support up to 3500 VMs, 100TB of capable and handles ‘up to 140,000 IOPS’ in a single 4U system.

Control it all with the ‘Tintri Global Center’, and Tintri says its customers ‘can scale their environments up to 35,000 virtual machines, 1 PB of usable capacity and up to 1.4 million IOPS in a single 42U rack to achieve unparalleled density and reduce data center operating costs substantially’.

Ken Klein, Tintri’s CEO and Chairman, said: “Performance is now table stakes. Speed is a commodity that rarely addresses the root cause of storage pain.”

With the T800 series, we take our challenge to traditional storage to a new level —what can you do in 4U? The T800 series has the brawn to handle very large scale deployments and the brains to offer VM-level visibility, control, automation and analytics.”

“Who wouldn’t like having the job done with one-quarter of rack space of traditional storage? Tintri approaches storage differently—not only in product capabilities, but also in design and UI—to produce a completely different customer experience.”

Jeff Wilhelm is one of Tintri’s customers and CTO of Envision Technology Advisors, who said: “Envision is a long-time Tintri customer—their innovations have redefined our approach to storage. The T880 is no exception. My team is blown away by its density and performance”.

“Tintri relieves us of the burdens of over-provisioning and over-managing our storage, letting us focus on what matters to our users—applications. We’ve built a cloud environment using their products so our customers can enjoy the same performance improvements we’ve seen with Tintri.”

Tintri says its new OS 3.1 is ‘the industry’s first and only hypervisor-agnostic application-aware storage operating system’, with key capabilities including integration with VMware vCenter SRM for automating disaster recovery through superbly capable Tintri ReplicateVM software, SecureVM for Encryption, and a REST API SDK for Workflow Automation.

Another customer is Geoff Grice, Head of IT and CMC Coal Marketing who said: “Tintri's Automation Toolkit packs quite a punch! Through the use of pre-defined PowerShell Cmdlets we were swiftly and easily able to identify VM's across multiple VM stores that needed optimisation.”

“In particular, manual snapshot sprawl can eat up valuable resources and potentially reduce the effectiveness of the system investment. The Tintri Automation Toolkit made identification and deletion of manual snapshots a breeze - we cleaned up in two countries simultaneously with the push of one button.”

A Tintri webinar with more info is available here with Tintri CEO Ken Klein and Tintri CTO, Kieran Harty, and for those in the US, a Tintri roadshow entitled “Tintricity On The Road” is being organised for early December across five cities.

The Tintri VMstore T800 series starts at a list price of US $74,000 and are available for ordering worldwide.
