Data protection solutions provider Datto has appointed Markus Rex to the newly created role of open source expert.
Rex was previously the co-founder and chief executive of ownCloud, an open source, self-hosted file synchronisation and sharing application platform, and chief technical officer of the Linux Foundation.
He will be tasked with overseeing Datto’s open source initiatives. The company has made a number of contributions to the open source community since its inception 10 years ago.
Datto's Inverse Chain technology uses the ZFS filesystem to provide rapid restore capabilities and enterprise-class scalability to managed service providers globally.
“We’re committed to providing our MSP partners and their end-user customers with data recovery and business continuity solutions that hold up to the highest performance, protection and privacy standards,” said Robert Gibbons, chief technology officer at Datto. “Markus’ deep industry expertise and open source knowledge will help ensure that we are adhering to that promise.”
A 2016 survey by Black Duck Software found that 65% of American companies make contributions of one kind or another to the open source community.
“With the adoption of open source code on the rise, Markus will not only support the growing community but advance Datto’s contributions in the open source ecosystem,” said Gibbons.
“Open source is at the core of Datto’s most advanced technologies. I’m excited to build upon Datto’s vision and solutions while helping the company continue to contribute to the community and remain a good open source citizen," said Rex.
He has been involved with open source for more than two decades, concentrating on how companies can build a business around open source while contributing to the community.
Rex has also been a board member of the Open Source Business Foundation and ran the SUSE Linux business for many years while it was part of Novell.
