EMC open-sources ViPR Controller

By

EMC has announced an open source version of its ViPR Controller software-defined storage product.

To be made available on Github next month under the Mozilla Public License 2.0, Project CoprHD is an open source version of EMC's ViPR Controller, sharing the same core features and functionality of the commercial product.

ViPR Controller is a single, vendor-neutral control point for storage automation.

The objective of open sourcing is to accelerate innovation and development of open and standard APIs for heterogeneous, multi-vendor storage management, EMC said.

This is the first time EMC has based an open source project on one of its commercial products. CoprHD will provide the same level of flexibility, choice, security and transparency as ViPR Controller.

ViPR Controller was the perfect candidate for open source contribution," said EMC emerging technologies division president CJ Desai.

"As fully transparent software focusing on storage automation, both the software and its users will benefit from community contributions. It’s an exciting time at EMC, and we’re looking forward to seeing the new ways Project CoprHD will evolve in the open source community."

The company is encouraging other storage vendors to contribute to CoprHD, as this will result in "more features more quickly," said EMC president of products and marketing Jeremy Burton.

Burton emphasised that EMC will be actively involved in Project CoprHD.

Asked whether CoprHD could become part of OpenStack, he said "that would be the preferred route," but noted that decision would be made by the community, not EMC.

"Canonical and EMC are working together to extend the Ubuntu OpenStack Partner ecosystem with the Software-Defined Storage automation capabilities from the EMC ViPR Controller," said Canonical vice president for cloud alliances and channel John Zannos.

"Customers will be able to capitalise on the rapid innovation and collaboration that comes from Ubuntu OpenStack and the open source community."

In general, EMC would prefer to contribute to open source projects rather than start its own, Burton said.

ViPR Controller will still be offered and supported by the company.
