EMC ScaleIO free for dev/test users

By

EMC's ScaleIO high-performance storage software will be available at no charge for non-production use.

EMC president of products and marketing Jeremy Burton (pictured) noted that developers have more power today than they have since the mid-90s, but they don't buy software the software the use (or want to use) - that's handled by procurement departments.

So the company plans to make its software available for download and trial on a "full featured, unlimited-time for non-production use," he said.

EMC emerging technologies division president CJ Desai said this would make the company's products more accessible to the DevOps community, and help avoid the perception of lock-in.

The first product to be released in this way is the ScaleIO high-performance storage software. The trial edition will be available from the end of this month.

Desai stressed that it was exactly the same software as the commercial product, the only difference being the licence terms that limit use to non-production workloads.

Planned enhancements for ScaleIO include IPv6 support, security improvements, and better disaster recovery facilities, he added.
