WD Portable Wi-Fi external hard disk

By

Hard disk maker WD has added a Wi-Fi version to its popular My Passport series of external hard disk storage devices.

The My Passport Wireless drive broadcasts its own 80211.N dual stream 2 x 2 wireless network that allows up to eight devices to connect at the same time and access any content stored on the drive. Available in 1TB or 2TB models

Data transfer rates vary. USB 3.0 will get up to 5Gb/s, USB 2.0 up to 48MBps (typically 33MBps), SD cards up to 25Mb/s (depends on the card). Wi-Fi rates are dependent on environmental conditions but in real world tests averaged around 110MBps for read and write.

It will also wirelessly stream video to suitable DLNA/UPnP devices such as smart TV’s, media players and gaming consoles. It can also connect as a network attached storage (NAS) to a network using USB 3.0 or Wi-Fi.

It has a six-hour continuous streaming, or 20-hour standby, rechargeable lithium-ion battery. Charging is via USB 3.0 and the device works while charging.

The device is 127mm x 86mm and 24.4mm/29.8mm high and 270/350g weight for the 1 and 2 TB versions. It is compatible with Windows and Mac. It comes with MyCloud software and apps for Android and iOS. At A$249.99 (1TB) and $299.99 (2TB) it is expensive for NAS use but as a portable Wi-Fi device will find a following with smartphone, tablet and Wi-Fi or SD equipped camera users with limited on device storage. It also accepts SD cards (and micro SD via an adaptor).
