Logitech MX Master mouse – review

By

Logitech’s MX Master Mouse is an impressive pointing device. It looks like a cross between Star Ship Enterprise space shuttle and a Battlestar Galactica Colonial Viper. I think you get the drift.

The design team (yes you need more than a mother and father mouse) was led by Arnaud Perret-Gentil, the product manager for computer peripherals at the Logitech Daniel Borel Innovation Centre in Switzerland. He is an innovator in the field of product development, and has been responsible for some of the latest advancements in Logitech pointing devices. His background in engineering, design and ergonomics ensures his work focuses on the users experience and their evolved needs.

So its Swiss designed – polite, punctual, precise and powerful. To quote the press release, “Its hand-sculpted design is the new paradigm for precise, fast, comfortable computer navigation. For people who work across multiple screens, devices and operating systems, the new mouse is optimised for controlling this complex environment with precision. The numerous navigation options and advanced features make it our best mouse ever.”

You can see a video on its design here.

So let’s look at those features

  • Speed adaptive scroll wheel that lets you auto shift from click-to-click to hyper fast scrolling
  • A thumb wheel (on the left side) that is used for side to side scrolling and page switching
  • Uses either the Logitech Unifying receiver or Bluetooth Smart (also called LE 4.0) to connect to newer compatible devices
  • Gesture controls on a Mac can be replicated
  • Its Darkfield Laser gives superior tracking on virtually any surface, on glass and high-gloss surfaces
  • The Micro-USB rechargeable battery lasts for up to 40 days (6 hours a day) and it has an indicator panel (three LEDs) to let you know when to recharge
  • Logitech Options software optimizes MX Mouse for Windows or Mac and lets you experience all the possibilities the mouse has to offer.

The thumbwheel offers additional functionality via the software

  • Invert scrolling direction
  • Reproduce touch-based gestures
  • Adjust scrolling speed and resolution
  • Navigate tabbed content
  • Switch apps
  • Swipe between full screen apps (Mac only)
  • Switch between full-screen apps (Windows 8 only)
  • Zoom in and out
  • Adjust volume
  • Control screen brightness
  • Display notifications (Mac only)

Opinion

I always wonder who names products – ‘Master’ Mouse sounds either like ‘Master and Commander’ or addressing a mouse in a formal way …

In any case it is a mouse – a mighty mouse - and at A$149.95 one with a gold tooth to boot.
