Outlook brings Wunderlist, Facebook and Evernote calendars to iOS and Android

By

Outlook was one of the original email, calendar, task and contact systems. By virtue of its Microsoft and Windows heritage it is still the most widely used desktop client (paid and free versions).

But now that in excess of 55% of all email is opened on mobile devices the market has again changed and the iOS email client leads at 52.5%, Gmail at 15.2%, Google Android (all varieties) at 9%, and Outlook at 11%.

Its mobile app has widely been described as ‘The best email app for iPhone and Android’ but there is a lot of competition in that space.

Last year Sunrise was acquired by Microsoft and bought its calendar integration technology to Outlook mobile for iOS and Android. Now it brings Wunderlist, Facebook and Evernote calendars - to start with - to see all your tasks, events and notes from your digital life in one place.

Disparate apps have grown up in the calendar space. It makes sense to provide a portal to amalgamate them all.

Wunderlist is a simple to-do list app that helps you get stuff done.

Facebook’s mission is to help people connect and spend time together in the real world. One of the features that helps people coordinate and plan events with their friends and family is Facebook Events.

Evernote  gets you effortlessly organized with notes, to-dos and more. Whether preparing notes for a big meeting or tracking your grocery list, having those notes available on your calendar when you need them makes your whole day easier.

This is in addition to calendars from Office 365, MS Exchange, Google, iCloud, and many more. Each calendar shows up as a different colour.

Sunrise has a range of integrations that are missing from Outlook, including connections to Asana, Todoist, Trello and Basecamp. Microsoft has asked users to submit other integrations they want to see, so those capabilities may make an appearance soon.

Comment

There is no doubt that mobile is taking over from the desktop – email/calendar/contacts/tasks is all about being able access information anywhere and anytime.

If you have not used Outlook on iOS or Android, its worth a try. It is the best at integrating all your needs in one place. In my experience it is superior to Google’s standard Android offerings. I don’t have enough experience with iOS to comment other than I have tried it on an iPhone and iPad and it works.

What I do like is the move to more fully integrate Cortana into Outlook and use it on a desktop and mobile device.
