Commonwealth Bank says logins to its online NetBank service and the CommBank app are back to normal on Tuesday, after both services faced day-long problems on Monday.

Payments on the bank's NetBank and mobile app did not work on Monday, after it experienced issues across its terminals due to problems faced by its card issuer, Visa.

The bank said on its Twitter feed on Tuesday morning: "Logins to NetBank and the CommBank app are continuing to operate as normal.

"We're seeing improvements for customers logging into NetBank and the CommBank app.

"Our teams are continuing to work on this issue. We're sorry for any inconvenience this has caused today and we thank you for your patience."

Pete Steel, executive general manager, Digital, Retail Banking Services, said in a statement that issues at one of the two data centres that supported the bank's mobile app and NetBank caused Monday's problems.

Steel apologised to customers who had experienced issues logging on to NetBank or the mobile app.

"We have two data centres that support the app and NetBank and unfortunately one of them has had an issue and so there is a lot of demand on one data centre," he said.

"If customers are struggling to log on, I’d encourage them to wait five or 10 minutes and try again. My sincere apologies, and we are working as hard as we can to get the issues fixed."
