Mobile vendor ecosystem group Global mobile Suppliers Association has released the first database that tracks the launch of 5G devices globally.

The data is part of the GSA Analyser for Mobile Broadband Devices (GAMBoD) database and will track new 5G devices and report.

Summary data is present in the first 5G ecosystem report which is available here.

According to the report, by mid-March, 23 vendors had confirmed the availability of forthcoming 5G devices with 33 different devices including regional variants. There were seven announced 5G device form factors: phones, hotspots, indoor CPE, outdoor CPE, modules, snap-on dongles, adaptors and USB terminals.

The breakdown:

  • 12 phones (plus regional variants)
  • 4 hotspots (plus regional variants)
  • 8 CPE devices (indoor and outdoor)
  • 5 modules
  • 2 snap-on dongles/adaptors
  • 1 USB terminal

The GSA said 5G chipsets had been announced or were available from five vendors: Huawei, Intel, Mediatek, Qualcomm and Samsung.

“Commercial services need commercial devices, so the momentum behind 5G devices represents an important benchmark for the worldwide roll-out of live 5G services,” said GSA president Joe Barrett.

“While early 4G devices were modems and dongles, with 5G we’re seeing smartphones lead the way with early commercial availability.

"This gives an early indication of where the industry is expecting to see the first 5G opportunities. For network and device vendors, regulators and industry observers, the GAMBoD database is a valuable go-to resource for the latest global 5G data."
