The apparently closed nature of Apple's iPhone means "the risk of infection becomes orders of magnitude lower", a Symantec security response engineer has concluded.

Writing in the company's Security Response Weblog, Eric Chien says that while malicious code probably will appear, it will "definitely not be on the scale as it is today with Windows and likely not reach the levels of current malware for current mobile devices."

He identifies two particular types of exposure. Firstly, it is possible that vulnerabilities exist that do allow the execution of unapproved code. Secondly, some owners are likely to try to customise their phones to run non-standard software, which could open the way for exploits.
