Ericsson to build Sri Lankan 3G network for Dialog Telekom

Sri Lanka's largest mobile operator, Dialog Telekom, a subsidiary of Telekom Malaysia, has chosen Ericsson to supply a  3G/HSPA network, the first in the South Asian region.

Ericsson will  provide the entire core network, and supply the majority of the radio access network. It will enable mobile users to experience a full service broadband, and a range of media-rich services such as video telephony, mobile TV streaming, IP telephony, and GPS-based services.

Dialog's network serves the whole of Sri Lanka and it claims more than three million customers.  It is one of four mobile operators in the country, all of which offer 3G: Celltel Lanka, Hutchison Telecommunications Lanka and Mobitel Sri Lanka.  A fifth licence is due to be auctioned later this year.
