Home Your IT Mobility Tempo is Siri for your calendar

Tempo, a Siri-esque iOS calendar that doubles as a personal assistant, today launched in Australia and New Zealand, the first time the app has been available outside of North America.

Tempo has been developed by Tempo AI, a spin-off company from SRI International, the home of Apple's Siri, and uses information from your iPhone's emails and contacts to help anticipate what a user intends to do.

The move to Australia is part of Tempo's planned global expansion, and the company said it has had to learn the nuances of language in its new countries, like postal codes and common nicknames for places.

CEO Raj Singh said Tempo will be in more countries by the end of this year.

The Tempo AI team has localised its natural language processes and semantic learning for users in Australia and New Zealand, optimising the way the app handles data like phone numbers, physical addresses, and colloquialisms that may be used in the context of a calendar.

“From day one, we’ve been on a mission to help people get more done with less hassle by building a smart calendar that works like an assistant. Today’s expansion to Australia and New Zealand, with over 4 million iPhone users, is a huge step towards bringing the power of AI to more people,” said Raj Singh, CEO of Tempo AI.

“We are determined to move very quickly and bring Tempo Smart Calendar to more App Store geos by the end of 2013.”

In terms of the app itself, only available for iOS at this stage, common tasks are reduced to a single tap, like dialling into conference calls, sending a text when running late, and checking flight status or reviewing an agenda, all within the calendar.

Since launching in February 2013, Tempo said it has applied AI to terabytes of data, having processed over one billion documents and enhanced over 100,000 unique conference call dial-in formats. Tempo is constantly improving as its machine learning system recognizes patterns in usage.

One in five users now uses Tempo as their default calendar, and users open the app five times per day on average.

According to the company, this engagement has allowed it to learn from this data to better understand, and even anticipate, the actions most commonly made around meetings and calendar events.
