Home Your Tech Mobility Samsung Galaxy S4 has arrived

It is almost impossible to report anything different to what the global gaggle of media geese have written about this smartphone but I owe it to you to try.

It was a moonlit night, 21 degrees with a nearly full moon and a very light breeze playing over the north harbour court at the magnificent Sydney Opera house – site of the Samsung launch.

The booze and food flowed liberally. Organisers wore a typical concerned scowl that the major gig of the year may go awry and they would never work in this town again. It didn’t but the music was too loud (please note we journos like to talk).

Media turned up in droves – some bloggers just out of kindergarten and some replete with cobwebs and thoughts of Christmas past (referring to those on the periphery that did not know why they were there). The 250 guest list was comprehensive to say the least.

The launch was in a specially constructed pavilion on the north point – why we will never know but that is the lot of the organisers (and perhaps the sponsorship of the Opera House). Me – I would have preferred the Concert hall – come on we were at the fabled Opera House.

The obligatory, well rehearsed, MC told us the phone was impressive – size counts and it obviously does. But as the gig rolled on it became obvious the software that Samsung has developed on top of the Android base was truly the star of the evening - the raison d'être.

If you like specifications I refer you to the boring but politically correct and functional article I wrote pre-launch (today) - what is under the bonnet.

OK back to this handset (and its almost a misnomer to call it a phone). Samsung has two aims.

At user level Samsung have created the most advanced, clever, aspirational device, ever. Yes I will have this over anything else, no arguments. I may even queue at the Samsung store to get it.

At a global level Samsung wants to kick the crap out of Apple (and anyone else in the smartphone or smart anything field) and it wants to be the global leader. Apple should be very concerned – unless the future iPhone 6 kicks so much ass that Samsung is demoralised and gives up - somehow after tonight, and even though I live in hope that Uncle Sam will endure, I don’t think this will be so.

This phone is a complete succees on every front. What more can be said.

Sorry for the emotive piece as a few beers will do that but mark my words there is nothing else like the S4 on this planet – beam me up Scotty and I will review it in more detail after I get my hot little hands on one.
