Google has added turn-by-turn cycling directions to Google Maps for Android.

Since July, cycling paths and directions have been a feature of the desktop version of Google Maps - fine for planning, but not very convenient when you're on the move.

Now the Google Maps for Android app has been enhanced with turn-by-turn directions and voice-guided biking navigation.

The feature helps avoid steep hills, and shows dedicated bike lanes, cycle paths, and road recommended for cycling.

Australian cyclists are able to add their favourite and recommended routes to Google Map Maker.

"We hope that biking navigation makes it easier for you to get outdoors and explore more of Australia," said Nabil Naghdy, product manager for Google Maps Australia and New Zealand.
