Opera hits 200 million mobile user milestone

It might not be as impressive as Twitter's 500 million users, but the 'other' mobile browser - Opera - now claims 200 million users.

Browser developer Opera claims the mobile versions of its products - Opera Mini and Opera Mobile - now have 200 million users between them (the overwhelming majority using Opera Mini).

That's not the cumulative number of downloads or installations, or an estimate based on visitors to a sample of sites.

One of the features of Opera Mini is that all traffic passes through the company's servers for compression. This feature is optional in Opera Mobile.
This approach significantly reduces the amount of data flowing to each device (saving time and money), sometimes by as much as 90%, company officials claimed.

But it also means the company can see how many people are using these browsers.

According to Opera officials, Opera Mini users viewed over 115 billion pages in June 2012, with page views increasing by more than 55% since June 2011.

And Opera Mini served 2015 million megabytes of data in June 2012, which would have been 20PB if uncompressed. This is an increase of more than 88% over the year.
