There's a growing amount of malware aimed at Android devices. Sophos has joined the defensive team by offering a free security app for the increasingly popular mobile OS.

Sophos Mobile Security is available free of charge via Google Play.

In addition to scanning newly-downloaded apps, the Sophos product also provides a mechanism for locating lost or stolen devices along with a remote locking mechanism.

The company plans to offer a managed version of the product to its enterprise customers later this year.

It already offers free AV for personal use on Mac OS X.

According to Symantec's security response team, nine of the 53 most recently detected threats are aimed at Android.

"We're seeing no slowdown in the number of malicious apps, as more smartphone owners use their devices to not only store personal data, but also access social networks and the Internet," said Matthias Pankert, vice president, product management, Sophos.
