Even though 4G is still quite new, we now live in an age of 4G, where there’s more 4G coverage from more telcos every day, where faster 4G speeds make the 3G speeds of some telcos look like dial-up, and where access to 4G is getting more affordable.
While Optus is still yet to see deliver a wider city rollout of 4G after successfully rolling out a very capable 4G network in Newcastle and the Hunter Valley, with Vodafone not yet due to commence 4G anything until sometime next year, Telstra has been powering ahead with 4G dongles, smartphones, tablets and Wi-Fi hotspots, as you’d expect it would do.
Now Telstra has released its second Wi-Fi hotspot, with this one being a pre-paid model to bring 4G to ever more of the masses wanting the fastest wireless speeds currently available.
Connecting up to five devices via Wi-Fi simultaneously, Telstra’s man of mobile, Andrew Volard, hollered that: “Increasingly people want to be connected outside the home and office so they can be informed and entertained on the move.

“In 4G coverage areas the Telstra Pre-Paid WI-FI 4G provides download speeds that are up to five times faster than other Pre-Paid mobile Wi-Fi devices in Australia”, continued Mr Volard, who also noted the quick and effortless speeds and improved responsiveness of 4G networks, delivering “less buffering and fewer interruptions”, while taking up the flexibility that pre-paid brings to consumers.
Telstra noted the “typical download speeds” of 2 to 40Mbps and “typical upload speeds” of 1 to 10Mbps when on 4G coverage, while explaining that the pre-paid Wi-Fi hotspot also worked as a DC-HSPA+ 3.5G modem when outside of 4G coverage aeras.
In addition, similar to Telstra’s first black Sierra Wireless post-paid 4G Wi-Fi hotspot, this new model also features an LED display for more information delivery about signal strength, length of connection time and other info when switched on, as well as a “handy web-based control portal” to change Wi-Fi security and other settings.
Aside from the previously mentioned features, Telstra’s pre-paid Wi-Fi hotspot offers four hours of battery life, 100 hours of standy and weights the equivalent of a few feathers at 105 grams.
The price is AUD $169 with 5GB included data and 30 days to use it in before a recharge is required, with a range of pre-paid recharge prices available here.
