Kindle coming to Australia

Your IT - Mobility

While Amazon has been happy to sell its Kindle ebook reader to Australian customers, it hasn't been available locally. That's about to change: the Kindle will soon be available at Woolworths, Big W and Dick Smith Electronics.

The Kindle ebook reader will be available from Woolworths group stores at the end of this month. The Wi-Fi only model will cost $159 and the 3G variant will be $219, both with free delivery. That compares reasonably with Amazon's prices to international customers, which are $US139 and $US189 excluding shipping charges.

Due to ship on August 29, pre-orders are being accepted at the Big W and Dick Smith Electronics web sites. Despite what you may read elsewhere, this weekend's Dick Smith Electronics '$30 off" promotion specifically excludes the Kindle.

Why would you buy a Kindle locally? Given there's not much difference in price, there's the ability to actually go into a store and walk away with one, and the ease of getting after sales service.
