App Store passes 15 billion milestone

The number of apps downloaded from the App Store has topped 15 billion, company officials are crowing.

App Store growth has been explosive. Following the opening in 2008, the first billion downloads took nearly 10 months, and that seemed impressive back in April 2009.

Then the pace started to pick up. It only took another three months for the running total to hit 1.5 billion. At that time there was an average of 37 downloads per iOS device.

The 2 billion mark was reached two months later, and another billion was added to the tally by January 2010.

By January 2011, it was time for Apple to run a competition marking the 10 billionth App Store download.

Less than 7 months later, the number has reached 15 billion. The downloads per device ratio has doubled in the last two years to 75, but that can be partly explained by users downloading updated versions as well as completely new apps.
