20 games are coming to Sony Ericsson's Android-powered Xperia Play smartphone, with 10 Xperia Play exclusives to whet the appetite of Xperia Play owners and all to be showcased at the upcoming E3 games conference - alongside Playstation 1 games soon to also be made available.
Boasting an existing library of '60+ games' optimised for the Xperia Play, and 20 more to come at E3 (alongside PS1 games too), Sony Ericsson is doing its best to ensure its Android-powered Playstation Phone has a nice selection of titles to tempt Xperia Play owners.
Of course, 60+ or 80+ titles is just a drop in the bucket compared to the tens of thousands of games available for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad, and the PlayStation brand has taken a bit of a serious bashing over the past few weeks through Sony's lamentable insecurity systems.
But even so, Sony's gaming power is still strong, and 20 new games via E3 is a good sign that Sony Ericsson wants its Xperia Play to be a success, especially if the company has an Xperia Play 2 planned and hopes to actually sell any of them - something that won't happen if the Xperia Play 1 isn't successful.
The Xperia Play looks like a cross between a PSP and an Android smartphone, which was the whole idea in the first place, and as a major point of difference between it and the iPhone or any other Android smartphone, it offers physical controls, which is something that most touch-screen smartphones don't offer.
The new games will be on display at 'the world's leading games expo', E3, which runs from June 7 to June 9, dates that cross over with Apple's WWDC conference where Apple will no doubt have a few gaming announcements of its own.
Sony Ericsson states that one of the 20 new titles is 'Minecraft', which is 'the much anticipated game from the Swedish indie developer Mojang', and which is 'is one of the fastest growing game franchises in history, with over eight million registered users announced to date and over 50,000 new players joining every day.'
Brendan Johnston, MD of Sony Ericsson Oceania said: 'As Xperia Play becomes available in Australia, the portfolio of great games continues to grow and we are delighted to announce 20 new games optimised for Xperia Play.
'By building on the open Android ecosystem, we're providing a brilliant opportunity for developers and game publishers to bring their best titles to new audiences and fantastic new experiences for Xperia PLAY owners. Keep watching this space.'
So, what's this about PS1 games coming to the Xperia Play, and what are the other 19 titles besides Minecraft E3-attendees can see this week?
