App Store prize goes to the UK

Your IT - Mobility

The 10 billionth App Store download happened over the weekend, and the $US10,000 prize went to a lucky punter in the UK.

Apple offered a $US10,000 prize to the person that downloaded the 10 billionth app from its App Store and just over a week later it has been awarded.

The prizewinner was Gail Davis of Orpington, Kent, UK, who downloaded the free Paper Glider game and will receive a $US10,000 iTunes gift card.

The milestone was reached in two and a half years after the App Store opened.

Philip Schiller, Apple's senior vice president of worldwide product marketing, said "the App Store has surpassed our wildest dreams."

"The App Store has revolutionised how software is created, distributed, discovered and sold," he added. "While others try to copy the App Store, it continues to offer developers and customers the most innovative experience on the planet."

Apple officials noted that there are more than 350,000 apps in the App Store (60,000 of them native iPad apps), and that 160 million users have downloaded apps.
