Whether you think the Android OS is the Autobot and iPhones the Decepticons - or the other way around - LG has transformed its Optimus handset into a new 2X model, with double the processing cores and a host of other upgrades in the fight for smartphone supremacy. Fight!
Korean electronics powerhouse LG has disguised its latest piece of technological wizardry as a smartphone, but within its deceptively diminutive proportions stands LG's hoped-for dual-core destroyer of all challengers that come before it in the quest to electronically rule planet Earth as the preferred digital companion of all humanity.
Whether the LG Optimus 2X can fulfil its mission or not depends on whether you are prepared to step up and be the 'Sam Witwicky' in the Optimus 2X's life, it's ally and protector from the elements - and that's where we'll let the allusions to the otherwise completely unconnected Transformers lie.
The Optimus 2X does pack some powerful features which we'll likely see in 2011 model smartphones from other smartphone makers, but LG has managed to get there first with a 2010 announcement (even though it too plans for a 2011 actual release) is and is milking this advantage as much as possible, just as you'd expect.
Those headline features include 'more powerful multimedia' and the high-performance NVIDIA Tegra 2 processor which LG says ''makes for faster, smoother web browsing and applications and lets users multitask with virtually no screen lag.'
Dr. Jong-seok Park, the CEO and President of LG Electronics Mobile Communications Company happily noted that: 'Dual-core technology is the next leap forward in mobile technology so this is no small achievement to be the first to offer a smartphone utilizing this technology.
'With unique features such as HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) mirroring and exceptional graphics performance, the LG Optimus 2X is proof of LG's commitment to high-end smartphones in 2011.'
LG says that dual dual-core NVIDIA Tegra 2 'system-on-a-chip' within the Optimus 2X runs at a 'clock speed of 1GHz and boasts low power consumption and high performance for playing video and audio.'
What is promised is 'faster web browsing and smoother gameplay compared with single-core processors running at the same speed as well as instantaneous touch response and seamless multitasking between applications.'
And, unlike competing smartphones that record video in 720P HD, LG's Optimus goes one better (or is that 2X better) with 1080P HD 'video playback and recording with HDMI mirroring that expands content on external displays to full HD quality.'
