Blackberry Bold 9780 launches'¦ same old, same Bold?

Your IT - Mobility

Research In Motion has launched its BlackBerry Bold 9780, the first smartphone in the Bold series to run on the new BlackBerry 6 operating system and the successor to the 9700.

Looking through the specs, not much has changed between the 9700 and 9780, except from an improved 5MP camera (up from 3.2) and the latest OS version it's running, which is the new multitasker OS 6.0.

The new model also featuers a a slight bump up in RAM too, going from 256MB to 512MB. The doubling of RAM should help to fix the lag that plagued some power users of the 9700.

The Blackberry 6 OS seems to offer a few cool new features including a new browser that is able to render HTML web pages (as well as HTML email) more quickly. RIM has touted features like tabs for accessing multiple sites simultaneously, pinch to zoom and a zoom feature.

"The BlackBerry Bold series has always been very popular in Australia and so it's great to be able to introduce the BlackBerry Bold 9780 with the new BlackBerry 6 operating system," said Adele Beachley, Managing Director for Australia at Research In Motion.

"The BlackBerry Bold 9780 features a sleek design with high performance communications, multimedia and web browsing capabilities that will make this new model popular with users for both their business and social needs."

The Bold 9780 smartphone supports 3G networks around the world, as well as Wi-Fi, and includes GPS for location-based applications and geo-tagging.

The smartphone is now available from today In Australia with Vodafone and Optus, with both telcos selling the mobile phone on plans starting at $59 per month.
