Your IT - Mobility

Optus has begun offering the Huawei Mini WiFi modem for $129 on prepaid data plans.

It doesn't seem long ago that a basic mobile broadband modem cost hundreds of dollars. Now Optus is selling Huawei's E583C mini WiFi modem that supports up to five simultaneous connections for $129 for use with prepaid service.

That price includes up to 8GB of data ("up to" because it's counted in 10MB chunks and is valid for six months) and 100 standard national SMSes. Unlimited use of Facebook, Twitter and MySpace is currently included during the validity of the starter kit and recharges.

Recharges are available in five denominations starting at $15 for a nominal 500MB and 50 SMSes (15 day validity) to $80 for 4GB and 100 SMSes (6 months validity). A 15% data bonus is offered for recharges purchased from the Optus web site using a credit card.

The device itself measures just 96 × 57 × 11.5mm, and weighs 90g including the battery (which is said to give up to four hours use or 100 hours on standby between charges).
