Samsung Galaxy Tab navigates with Navigon

Your IT - Mobility

Samsung will include Navigon turn-by-turn navigation software preinstalled on all Galaxy Tab devices sold in Australia.

According to research carried out by GfK, around 64% of intending tablet purchasers plan to use navigation software. Consequently, Samsung and Navigon have teamed to provide the latter's navigation software at no extra cost on the Galaxy Tab.

The software and its Navteq maps are resident on the device, so no data charges are involved in routine use of the app.

Features include 2D and 3D map views; turn-by-turn voice guidance; routing based on driving style, the day of the week, and the time of day; photo-realistic displays of exits, pedestrian Navigation; and Google Local Search.

Certain advanced features are available for in-app purchase. These are the Safety & Relax Package ($A12.95; Lane Assistant Pro, Speed & Red Light Camera Warnings, School Zones and Speed Warner), the Traffic Live Package ($A19.95; real-time traffic information from Suna plus re-routing to avoid congestion) and the Sound & Fun Package ($A9.95; text-to-speech for street names, plus international voices).

Gerhard Mayr, Navigon's vice-president worldwide mobile phone business, said the Galaxy Tab's size and great performance makes it an ideal platform for his company's first dedicated tablet navigation software on the Australian market. It is also Navigon's first Android app for this market.
