Novatel Wireless claims its Ovation MC545 is the world's smallest dual-carrier HSPA+ USB device.
According to Novatel Wireless officials, the Ovation MC545 modem is the world's most compact and light-weight DC-HSPA+ USB modem on the market. The device's dimensions and weight were not specified.
Dual-carrier operation provides a theoretical maximum download rate of 42 Mbps. Spanish mobile company Telefónica Móviles demonstrated actual speeds of 40.5 Mbps at an event in Madrid. Novatel only sells its Ovation products through mobile operators.
"We're thrilled to be the first to offer our customers the fastest and most reliable mobile broadband in the most compact form factor," said Carlos Vera Sánchez, business marketing director of Telefónica España. "DC-HSPA+ technology offers consumers more advanced data capabilities with faster speed. The Ovation MC545 brings this technology to the consumers and will allow for new mobile broadband services supporting more compelling multimedia applications and richer user experiences," he added.
The MC545 operates on the 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands, and is said to incorporate "advanced antenna technologies to maximise data throughput and operating range." It also includes support for MicroSHDC cards of up to 32 GB capacity.
The demonstration in Madrid used Ericsson network infrastructure.
