Sygic adds real-time traffic updates to GPS apps

Your IT - Mobility

SUNA Traffic Channel information is now available as an add-on for Sygic's Mobile Maps and Aura navigation applications for smartphones.

Available for iPhone, iPad, Symbian, Android, Windows Mobile and other devices, Sygic's Mobile Maps and Aura apps deliver turn-by-turn navigation instructions.

The latest feature for the apps is road conditions information from SUNA Traffic Channel. SUNA provides information about congestion, road closures, and foreseeable problems such as major sporting events. The service covers the mainland state capitals and surrounding areas.

Most SUNA-compatible GPS devices designed for in-car use decode data that is piggybacked on commercial FM transmissions, but that's not practical for smartphones and similar devices. So SUNA also provides a data feed in XML format via the Internet, and that's what Mobile Maps and Aura consume.

"The sophistication of the Sygic navigation apps integrated with SUNA Traffic Channel makes this offering a great way for users to receive detailed traffic information via their smartphone," said Adam Game, CEO at Intelematics, the company behind SUNA.

A 12-month subscription to real-time traffic costs $A28.99 and can be purchased from the Sygic web e-shop. It requires Mobile Maps version 8.12 or higher, or Aura version 1.16 or higher, plus an Internet connection.

Intelematics recently announced the latest improvements to SUNA Traffic Channel.
