Garmin Australia has issued a recall for some of its most popular GPS devices as they have the potential to overheat, despite the cold Australian winter.
Garmin has identified a risk that the batteries in some of its devices may overheat when used in Nuvi GPS systems that contain a specific printed circuit board (PCB) design.
"In rare circumstances, overheating of the product's battery may lead to a fire hazard. This defect only applies to the nuvi products with the model numbers specified," said the company.
The affected units are the nüvi 250W, nüvi 260W, and nüvi 760 sold at Harvey Norman, The Good Guys, GPS Oz, Everything GPS, and Dick Smith between September 2007 and July 2009.
To determine if their unit is affected, consumers should visit this
website, which has been set up by Garmin to coordinate the recall.
Garmin Ltd, incorporated in Schaffhausen, Switzerland, is the parent company of a group of companies founded in 1989 by Gary Burrell and Min Kao (hence the name GarMin), that develops consumer, aviation, and marine technologies for the Global Positioning System.
