RIM gives Aussies a taste of the Blackberry App World

Your IT - Mobility

After a long wait, Blackberry fanatics down under can finally get their fix of paid apps with Research In Motion opening the paid section of the Blackberry App World  in Australia.

Local users on Monday morning began to report that they were able to make purchases from the Blackberry App World Australia online store.

Much like Apple's insanely popular iTunes app store, Blackberry App World is free to download and there are many free apps along with the newly available paid apps.

The Blackberry App World is open, much like Google's Android app store.

Blackberry users in thirteen different countries have been able to buy applications since April 2009, while 42 countries had access only to the free-only versions.

RIM began offering free apps on the Aussie site last December, but only now has it begun offering paid apps as well.

At the Blackberry sponsored Wireless Enterprise Symposium (WES) in April, it was announced that an average of 1 million apps were being downloaded each day.

The store is available for the following Blackberry devices that are updated to Blackberry OS version 4.5.0 or higher:

* Blackberry Torch 9800 - Preloaded
* Blackberry Bold 9000/9700/9650
* Blackberry Storm and Blackberry Storm2 9500/9520/9530/9550
* Blackberry Tour 9630
* Blackberry Pearl 8100/8110/8120/8130
* Blackberry Pearl Flip 8220/8230
* Blackberry Curve 8300 8300/8310/8320/8330
* Blackberry Curve 8900
* Blackberry Curve 8520/8530/9300
* Blackberry 8800

Developers can price their applications starting at $US 0.99.
