Telstra iPhone 4 here on July 30 with usual miserly data plans

Your IT - Mobility

Telstra will launch iPhone 4 in Australia on July 30 but as usual being on the country’s best mobile network will come at a price. For a device like the iPhone 4, which is simply made for being online anywhere at any time, the best Telstra can offer for the top end model on even the most expensive capped plan is a meagre 500MB of data.

Unlike the case with the NBN, which has forced Telstra to slash its broadband prices (much to the chagrin of its competitors), Telstra obviously believes that its mobile network is that much better than rivals Optus and Vodafone that it can afford to compete on quality.

However, for many high end users offering the iPhone 4 32GB model on a $99 a month two year plan with just 500MB and the prospect of having to fork out extra to buy a few more GB (we don’t know how much yet) may be too bitter a pill to swallow.

For low-end users, a $49 month plan for the iPhone 4 16GB model will cost you $149 upfront with a ridiculously low 200MB data allocation.

While Optus and Vodafone are yet to reveal their pricing, it’s a safe bet the data allocations will be far healthier.

On the plus side, for the top two of the three Telstra price plans on offer ($49, $79, and $99), there is a what appears to be a fairly generous talk and text allocation of $750 a month. And the $79 and $99 plans are nothing upfront for the 16GB model.

The iPhone 4 goes on sale at some Telstra stores at 12.00 AM Friday, July 30. The full list of stores opening at midnight is available at http://www.telstra.com.au/mobile/docs/iphone_4_locations.pdf
