Skype comes to Sony Ericsson Symbian phones

Your IT - Mobility

Skype has made its VoIP software available on three Symbian-based Sony Ericsson smartphones; the Satio, Vivaz and Vivaz pro.

The software enables users to make Skype calls via either a WiFi or cellular data connection (3G, GPRS, EDGE) and can be downloaded to supported handsets from skype.com/m.

It will also be made available on the Sony Ericsson Play Now arena (www.playnow-arena.com) later this month. Skype says also that it will run on any Sony Ericsson running the latest version of Symbian.

Skype for Symbian enables users to: make free Skype-to-Skype calls to other Skype users anywhere in the world; send and receive instant messages to and from individuals or groups; share pictures, videos and other files, receive calls to their existing online number; see when Skype contacts are online and available to call or message; import names and numbers from the phone’s address book.

Unlike the recently released version of Skype for the iPhone, Skype has not indicated any plans to start charging for Skype-to-Skype calls made over mobile networks from Sony Ericsson handsets.

Skype released in December 2009 a beta version of Skype for Symbian that worked on Nokia Symbian S60 3rd Edition Feature Pack 1 and Feature Pack 2 devices, including a number of popular E and series handsets.
