Construction needs cloud flexibility

Australia’s embattled construction sector could benefit from cloud based information systems that can be switched on and off in lockstep with individual projects – with the exception of those organisations based in remote areas like the Kimberleys.

NetComm launches credit-card size 3G/WiFi modem router, exclusively via Apple

Your IT - Mobility

NetComm has launched its MyZone pocket-sized WiFi access point, router and 3G modem, exclusively via the Apple Store for the first two months.

The MyZone - which at 97x60.6x9mm is little bigger than a credit card - retails for $299 and can support up to ten wireless devices concurrently. Its integrated lithium-ion battery is claimed to deliver power for up to six hours of operation and 40 hours on standby. The battery can be recharged via a micro USB cable while the unit is in operation.

It supports HSPA in the 850MHz, 1900MHz, and 2100MHz bands: which means it will operate on Next G, and Australian and overseas 3G networks but not in some of the recently added coverage areas of the Optus and Vodafone networks, which have used 900MHz network gear. In this band it falls back to slower 2G (GPRS) operation.

The unit is compatible with Windows, Mac and Linux operating systems and is able to support downloads at a theoretical maximum of 7.2Mbps and upload at 5.76Mbps.

NetComm's managing director, David Stewart, said: "A key feature of the MyZone is its superior battery life. Battery life is important, whether you are a business or consumer. We have therefore concentrated development around maximising battery life."

He added: "NetComm has focused on developing a simple user interface for ease of use. The MyZone employs NetComm's 'Smart Connect' technology that preloads the MyZone with carrier connection information, meaning customers can connect to their 3G network with minimal configuration."

The MyZone will be available at Apple retail stores and online from the Apple Store for a two months exclusively.

It ships without a SIM, which users must purchase separately. However, BigPond SIMs work only in BigPond devices. A NetComm spokesman told iTWire there was no arrangement with any carriers for it to be offered as bundle with a mobile broadband service, but added, "We are always talking to carriers."
