Skype has launched a new version of its iPhone application that, for the first time, allows iPhone users to make and receive calls over their 3G data connection, but it will start charging for Skype-to Skype-calls.
Skype-to-Skype calls on 3G will be free for a trial period, until the end of 2010. Skype says details of pricing will be announced in the coming months and will be "in line with Skype's commitment to providing customers with great value." Skype-to-Skype calls over WiFi will still remain free.
No reason was given for the move to start charging for Skype-to -Skype calls, which provoked an angry response from commentators on Skype's blog post announcing the move. And of course it begs the question: will Skype start charging for Skype-to-Skype calls from other mobile phones?
Skype has also added a number of other new features in the latest version. It claims to offer "near CD-quality sound for Skype-to-Skype calls" through the use of wideband audio on iPhone 3GS or 2nd generation iPod touch and later..
There is an upgraded call quality indicator that, Skype says, will help customers choose the best moment to call. Start-up time has also been improved and access to the dial pad from the home screen made quicker.
The new version is compatible with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, iPod touch and iPad. It requires iPhone OS version 3.0 and above. It is available as a free download from the App Store or at
