Revised MacBook follows Pro lead

Your IT - Mobility

Apple has updated its entry-level notebook. The revised MacBook promises improved performance and battery life.

The latest incarnation of the MacBook gets a performance boost from its 2.4GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Nvidia GeForce 320M graphics processor. The latter is said to be up to 80 percent faster than its predecessor.

Apple claims the battery in the new model is the longest-lasting MacBook battery ever, providing up to 10 hours per charge, and a service life of up to 1000 recharges. The 10 hours per charge is partly the result of changes to the battery itself (like other models, it is no longer removable), and partly due to the power efficiency of the 320M GPU.

Most of the usual Mac features are included (such as Gigabit Ethernet, 802.11n networking, multi-touch trackpad, and a mic and camera. But if you want a FireWire port, you'll need a MacBook Pro instead.

The base configuration (250GB hard drive) of the MacBook costs $A1249/$US999. Options include 4GB of RAM instead of 2GB, and 320 or 500GB hard drives.
