The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Virgin Mobile has been quick to point out that the new capped plans announced by VHA yesterday with much-touted unlimited on-net calling are what it has been offering for some time.
VHA yesterday announced a range of new plans that are common to both the 3 and the Vodafone brands, its first step in rationalising the offerings of the two former entitis.
"We think free calls to people on your network is a great idea. In fact we've been doing the same thing for years!" said Anthony Hearne, marketing director, Virgin Mobile Australia.
"At Virgin Mobile we already offer both new and existing, Your Cap pre-paid And Rollover Cap post-paid plan members unlimited mobile talk & text to other members in Oz.
"Better yet, we don't charge you to call yourself, with free voicemail in Australia, 24 hours a day, seven days a week" (voicemail retrieval is charged within the cap on VHA's new plans).
Virgin Mobile also offers unlimited on-net calling on its cheapest, $19 per month plan. VHA offers this only on plans from $29 per month and above.
Virgin Mobile also offers what VHA has just introduced: consistent per minute pricing across all postpaid capped plans (90 cents per minute in both cases with 35 cent flag fall on VHA and 40 cents on Virgin Mobile).
Hearne added: "We're happy to say that all Virgin Mobile Members on Rollover Cap post-paid plans – whether it's above or below $49 per month - also receive a generous monthly data allowance to enjoy the Internet, email and other data on the go."
Virgin Mobile introduced its rollover plans last November. These enable unused call and SMS credit, but not data, to be rolled over into the following month. This means that, rather than users getting $Y amount of call credit each month, they get 2 x $Y spread over two months.
Hearne said that Virgin Mobile had just passed the million customer mark. "What really separates us from our competitors is the fact that we treat our customers like members," he claimed.
"That means access to a host of extra benefits ranging from Virgin family offers such as Velocity points, mobile credit when you fly with Virgin Blue, and VIP access to gigs and even a free beer on Friday."
