Amazon gearing up to compete with iPad?

Your IT - Mobility

Amazon has reportedly acquired a touchscreen developer whose technology is cheaper and in some ways better than that used in the iPad. Is this the harbinger of a future multitouch Kindle?

According to a report in the New York Times, Amazon has acquired the startup company Touchco, a touchscreen specialist.

According to the Times's source, Amazon will fold the Touchco technology and personnel into its Kindle hardware division.

Neither company has officially commented, and Touchco's website now just says, "Thank you for your interest in Touchco. As of January 2010, the company is no longer doing business."

Touchco's technology is based on Interpolating Force-Sensitive Resistance (IFSR), which gives it some capabilities that Apple's capacitive touchscreens can't match.

For one thing, IFSR screens are cheaper to make. They can be flexible, and even transparent.
