The Government has offered Australia's three mobile operators, and vividwireless, renewal of their existing spectrum allocated on 15 year licences in the late 90s and early 2000s at set prices, while the Government expects to rake in $3 billion.
Launched in March and originally covering Melbourne, Sydney and Brisbane, Whereis Navigator uses information from the Australian Traffic Network, which also supplies TV and radio stations with traffic news.
The information is used to modify Whereis directions to avoid major traffic incidents.
This feature helps Whereis Navigator compete with the SUNA Traffic Channel that provides live traffic information to conventional GPS navigation devices via radio.
Whereis Navigator works with certain BlackBerry, iMate, Palm Treo, Samsung, HTC, LG, Nokia and Sony Ericsson devices.
While some features are available free of charge (and that's completely free as there are no data charges), premium services including the spoken directions, traffic incidents, and fixed speed and red-light camera alerts cost $A15 per month or $A4 for 24 hours. A seven-day free trial is available.
Whereis Navigator is only available to Telstra mobile customers.
