Official Wikipedia iPhone app arrives

Your IT - Mobility

The Wikimedia Foundation has released a free app providing access to Wikipedia on an iPhone or iPod touch.

Wikipedia Mobile is the first iPhone app of its kind to be backed by the Wikimedia Foundation.

Unlike the Australian developed TiniWiki app, Wikipedia Mobile does not store the Wikipedia content on the iPhone or iPod touch. Instead, it fetches the information as required.

"This app is focused on being very simple and very fast," according to the official description. But some early users have criticised that simplicity, making unflattering comparisons with established third-party apps.

However, the plan is to add features to the open source app in line with user requests.

Wikipedia can be accessed directly via the iPhone's Safari web browser, but the formatting isn't ideal for a small screen.

Wikipedia Mobile is a free download from Apple's App Store.

Other free apps for accessing Wikipedia include Wikipanion (rated 17+ by Apple for "Frequent/Intense Mature/Suggestive Themes") and Wiki Tap (rated 4+).

Wikipedia Mobile is also rated 4+, so presumably the App Store employee that rated Wikipanion chose to view different pages. Apple has seemed to struggle with giving appropriate and consistent ratings to apps that access external content.
