Palm Pre coming June 6

Your IT - Mobility

The eagerly awaited Palm Pre smartphone will be available on June 6 through Sprint carrier outlets.

The compelling new device , which combines both a touchscreen interface and a slideout keyboard, is viewed by some as a potential rival to Apple's iPhone.

Built on Palm's new webOS platform, the Pre includes a browser, e-mail capability, WiFi, and GPS.

It also one-ups the iPhone (as things stand now) in the OS's ability to have more than one application open at the same time.

It mimics the iPhone's automatic rotation feature, such that the onscreen display changes from portrait to landscape as you turn the device. The Pre also mimics the iPhone's multitouch display, over which some have speculated that Apple might threaten a lawsuit.

The Pre will be sold through Sprint stores, Best Buy, Radio Shack, Wal-Mart, and online. The price will be $200 with a two-year service agreement, following a $100 mail-in rebate.
